Introduction to Chunking
Scope
Chunking prosody can indicate the scope of an adjective. That is it can signal whether the adjective applies only to the following noun or to more than one noun. In the first utterance below, the adjective French applies to both bread and cheese:
French bread and cheese
In the next utterance the adjective applies only to bread and the type of cheese is left unspecified:
French bread and cheese
